WHY FUEL, WHY NOT SIN TAX?

Malaysia ranked world’s 10th largest consumer of alcohol

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has been named by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the world’s 10th largest consumer of alcohol despite its small population and size.

Statistics by the international body this year also showed that Malaysians spent over US$500mil (RM1.5bil) on alcohol with a per capita consumption of seven litres.
Beer consumption in Malaysia is 11 litres per capita.Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie said the problem of alcohol consumption in the country was getting serious.
“Alcohol is not only causing a lot of health issues but is also contributing to a significant number of accidents,” she said here yesterday. - TheStar

** There is so much hype following the release of the above statistics on alcohol consumption in Malaysia and as usual some bankrupt politicians are harping on this issue to attack the Government.

Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is one of the main causes of cancer deaths in Malaysia. In fact, 95 per cent of lung cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis. A whopping 90 per cent of lung cancer is caused by cigarette smoking. The occurrence of lung cancer is also high among non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke (passive smoking).


Its a well established fact that both alcohol (except for medical) and tobacco is bad for the health. Indeed tobacco is among the top killers (via cancer) in the world.


Unlike RON95 PETROL, DIESEL and LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG), alcohol and tobacco have no real benefit to the people as consumer/food items.


So, my humble suggestion is... WHY NOT the Government stop scaring the people with impending fuel price hikes and turn your sight on these two killer items amid us.


WHY can't the Government of Malaysia consider increasing its Government TAX on Alcohol and Tobacco ... say double the current rate to make up for the Government subsidy for fuel?


Some religious bigots would come into the picture even before understanding this suggestion in totality.


The revenue from these hiked SIN TAXES could be channelled, not to some PAS run political-religious indoctrination camps in Kelantan, but to fund our defense expenditure (runs into hundreds of millions, if not billions of ringgit lately).

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has pledged its support and 100,000 supporters for the polls watchdog Bersih 2.0′s rally, dubbed the “Walk for Democracy.”

This was announced by PAS central committee member Mohamad Sabu and Kuala Krai MP Dr Hatta Ramli at a press conference here this afternoon.

“We will mobilise 100,000 members and supporters from PAS alone,” said Sabu who is eyeing the party’s number two post.

He revealed that the rally would be held on July 9 at 2 pm in Kuala Lumpur.

Asked on the motive behind the rally, Hatta said the government had not agreed to the demands made in the first rally four years ago. - FMT 

WHAT are Bersih’s demands?

For a free and fair elections amid claims that the Election Commission has failed in its duties. 

WHO is behind Bersih?

More than 90% of them are OPPOSITION POLITICIANS and their die hard supporters and members. - (The above news article just reaffirms this point)  

In 2007, under the failed leadership of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Opposition fooled the Home Minister and moved 10,000 odd of the members and supporters onto the streets of Kuala Lumpur in a blatant show of force.

The Nov 07 Bersih Rally was all about showing the numbers, aimed at amplifying the kind of support the Opposition seemingly enjoyed at that time.

BERSIH’s camouflaged their actual agenda well by crying out for electoral reforms and free & fair elections.

If indeed the electoral process or elections were rigged by the BN government, how could the Opposition have wrested control over Kelantan more than 20 years ago?

How could PAS have taken control of Terengganu in 1999 if the electoral process was indeed rigged and the Election Commission was a tool of the BN government as often accused by the Opposition?

If indeed the whole process was corrupt and the Opposition were cheated, hoodwinked and victimised during the elections, how the hell did they manage to win over and form the state governments in Kedah, Penang, Kedah, Perak(for a short while) while maintaining control over Kelantan?

  

In 2007, under the weak and rudder-less leadership of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, those behind Bersih even dragged Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and Istana Negara into their dirty game.

The KING had to issue a statement to refute Opposition lies that His Royal Highness had sanctioned the illegal Nov 2007 rally.

The Opposition have found an apt chairperson for Bersih in the person of Ambiga Sreenivason.

The former Bar Council president who was recently barred from setting foot in Sarawak for her ‘mulut bacul’.

In 2007, the then weak and rudder-less government under Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his equally ‘smart’ Home Minister allowed the YELLOW Bersih to take to the streets and dirty this country on Nov 10.

Exactly two weeks later on Nov 25, the RED Hindraf did the same thing under a different banner.

The movers behind these two ‘muscle flexing’ rallies are the same people who aimed to show that the Government of that day was incompetent to even stop them.

The Sarawak state government had the guts to bar Ambiga from the state following her unethical calls for the people of Sarawak to take to the streets ‘like in Egypt”.

Would our current Home Minister take the necessary ‘preventive steps’ to put a stop to such blatant abuse of freedom in this country?

If the government is not prepared to grab the bull by its horns, then all organisations – political or otherwise – who are against the Opposition’s antics via the likes of Bersih should make the necessary moves.

Wonder what would it be like if all Barisan Nasional linked NGOs and associations unleash their members and supporters for a similar show of force on the 9^th of July on the streets of Kuala Lumpur and Penang…when Bersih is planning for another show of force?

I'm sure many around the world would do so too.


Guess its not too much to ask for the Religious Department to urge the rakyat to pray for the speedy recovery and well being of a leader who has sacrificed his entire life for the well being of his people, and others beyond the shores of Malaysia.


My dear Malaysians, lets pray for God to shower Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad & Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali with continued good health.

Nothing appears wrong or out of the norm with 1Malaysia. 


The message is certainly much clearer after watching the above Lim Kok Wing Sound and Music Design Academy produced video clip of the theme song.


But why are Perak DAP's SIX TERM Chairman Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham and his cousin cum Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Meng leading these bunch (pix below) in giving 1Malaysia a thumbsdown? 


Is this about their own political expediency or that of DAP, or could it be their misunderstood ways of achieving greater understanding, acceptance and unity among us Malaysians ? 


I'm confused ... and again I don't find anything wrong with a message of unity via 1Malaysia.

A Dangerous Precedent !

Royal Malaysian Police under attack ?

We have only watched movies and read in detail about how the much feared communist terrorist attacked and killed our policemen before torching their beat bases and stations.


One of the deadliest and blatant among those string of attacks in the Peninsula was in Bukit Kepong on the 23rd of February in 1950. 


Fifteen years later, an equally vicious attack took place at the Siburan police station in Sarawak. The communist were ruthless.


In recent history only the 1985'  MEMALI incident would ring an almost similar bell but with a slight difference - policemen were attacked and killed by villagers on Ibrahim Libya's orders.


So, it is indeed shocking and scary after learning that a group of men had used petrol to torch a police beat base in Bukit Tambun. 


The ROYAL MALAYSIAN POLICE beat base in Bukit Tambun - Nibong Tebal was torched after police there arrested a suspected criminal believed to have been involved in an earlier brutal machete attack.


What will they do next ? 


Are such actions fruits of a decade long move to demonise and ridicule the Royal Malaysian Police and other vital institutions in our country? 


Where are we heading ?

WHO knows it all?

The days when “the government knows it all” are over, so said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in one of his earlier speeches as the 6^th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

He has repeated the message many times since and the last time we heard it a little louder was during the 1^st Malaysia-ASEAN Regional Bloggers Conference held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The Prime Minister reiterated the message, elaborated and invited Malaysians to share their thoughts, ideas and vision with the Government.

The term “government knows it all” certainly doesn’t mean the Government knows nothing as some are quick to paint. I gather that the Government, or rather the Prime Minister is just being open.

What was done behind closed doors are now being gradually opened for greater participation and civilised discourse. As the populace “grows”, the Government invites greater ownership.

At the BlogHouseMalaysia organised conference, Najib engaged the regional bloggers in an open Q&A – dialogue in the presence of former Prime Minister, Premier blogger and Blog House Malaysia patron Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Najib reassured that the Government would ensure media freedom and uphold the MSC Bill of Guarantee of “no internet censorship”.

(If Dr Mahathir was indeed a control freak he certainly wouldn’t have introduced the MSC Bill of Guarantee)

To cut a long story short, I guess we should seriously look around us and think for a second if we truly lack “Press Freedom” in this country.

Most of our mainstream newspapers have become more blunt (some are of course sliding into oblivion), the various political party newspapers and newsletters are selling like hot-cakes despite their half-truths and outright lies.

Blogs are practically ‘on fire’ with loads of information on any given subject. Micro-blogging site Twitter is staple food to an increasing number of Malaysians – no matter who or where they are.

The internet is absolutely free from any kind of censorship.

If all that doesn’t spell freedom, I just wonder what freedom of the press really is in the eyes of the so-called ‘fighters of press freedom”.

The ‘government knows-it-all” days maybe over but an increasing number of partisan Non-Govermental Organisations and their political masters seem to be after the “know-it-all” title now.

These NGOs and some ‘old politician’ seem to know it all and since they think they know it all they expect everyone else to toe their line.

p/s Utusan Malaysia too exercised their freedom by sacking one of their journalist who happens to be the National Union of Journalist president (an Opposition party sympatiser – if not hardcore supporter)  to protect the interest of the company which employs thousands of responsible journalist  who certainly uphold the spirits of Press Freedom.
