I still cherish the days when we had a strong Government that truly worked for the overall benefit of the rakyat.
Despite the many shortcomings and hiccups along the way, we sailed the rough seas with great confidence and a clear direction.
Many developing countries and even some developed ones relied on us for guidance and ‘out-of-the-box’ kind of ideas, not only on development but also international relations and fresh 21st century diplomacy.
Malaysia was a respected nation that drew admiration from friends and foes.
We held our heads high when our Prime Minister spoke, either in PWTC during the Umno General Assembly or at the United Nation’s General Assembly before other world leaders.
Vision 2020 was our long term goal (we’re now slightly more than a decade away from that point in time) and I believe that 2020 will say a lot about Malaysia and Malaysians in future.
Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad and his team of cabinet members plus the various planning units of the government then, drafted the national ‘holistic’ development blue-print that transcends race, religion, color or lingo.
The ultimate aspiration was the evolution (particularly mental evolution) of the various races towards a truly cohesive society called Bangsa Malaysia. We just aspired to be Malaysian first before anything else.
I think Bangsa Malaysia = 1Malaysia.
(I don’t understand Islam Hadhari and almost everything that Malaysia’s 5th Prime Minister did or rather let others do … and I’m not sorry about it.)
But are we now heading in the right direction, towards realizing a national dream which was spelled out in 1991?
V2020 is a dream that was slowly being transformed into reality with good support from Malaysians until Dr.Mahathir unsuspectingly handed over the mantle of leadership to his successor in October 2003.
What Dr.Mahathir’s successor did to Vision2020 and the entire social fabric of our society is now left to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to repair.
In just more than 100 days after assuming office, the Prime Minister and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have demonstrated a greater level of leadership that has renewed our confidence.
I hope we could stay the course this time and be strict with those who are adamant about derailing this beloved nation.
Vision2020, I believe, is still within our grasp with the renewed confidence in Malaysia’s new leadership.
KeranaMu 1Malaysia.
